Our End of the Deal

03.03.24

I attend a worship service every Tuesday night at a local church in the town where I go to college. For the past several weeks we have discussed the characteristics of Yahweh. The Lord never leaves or abandons us. He is always here for us even when we fail. Genesis 15 paints a beautiful picture of how we will never be able to uphold our end of the deal. I encourage you to read through Genesis 15.

It essentially is a story about Abraham making a covenant with God. In Bible times covenant-making traditions were a bit gruesome. Animals are cut in half and then lined up in two parallel lines to form an aisle. Then the two people making the covenant would walk down the aisle essentially saying that if they break the covenant then they are to end up like these animals. In Genesis 15 Abraham falls into a deep sleep and sees a vision. The Lord is walking down this aisle. This indicates that the Lord is telling Abraham that He will uphold his end of the deal even if Abraham does not uphold his end. This sure does paint an accurate picture of what humanity needs. We are sinful fallen humans who will never be able to measure up. We will never be worthy of God's goodness. But, the Lord sent His son so that we may live for eternity with Him in Heaven. He loved us so deeply that he chose to uphold his end of the deal even when He knew that we wouldn't be able to do the same in return. What a love.
